Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based method of therapy that works to engage the client's motivation to change their behavior. Unlike other forms of therapy, with MI the therapist seeks to find out how ready the client is to embrace change and approaches conversations in a way that encourages them to consider making alterations. The therapist looks for signs of ambivalence and resistance, exploring possible solutions and challenges in order for the client to recognize and verbalize thoughts about making behavioral changes. Studies have seen a great deal of success when employing this strategy as it can guide clients toward positive outcomes such as reducing problem drinking or managing mild addictions.
